Caregivers ResourcesWhat would an issue on care giving be without an article on resources? There are hundreds of Internet sites out there that deal with resources. After looking at most of them, I am listing the ones that I think will help you the caregiver the most. Administration on Aging The U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) works with the national aging network regional offices; 57 State Units on Aging; more than 661 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA); 222 tribal organizations, representing 300 tribes; and thousands of service providers, senior centers, caregivers and volunteers to plan, coordinate and develop community level systems of services to meet the needs of older persons and their caregivers. This is supported by the Older Americans Act of 1965, as amended. The local AAA should be the first place contacted by a caregiver when help is needed. Local AAAs are usually listed in the city or county government sections of the telephone directory under Aging or Social Services. Both the patient and their caregivers may be eligible for services provided. These services may include homemaking or home-health aide services, home delivered meals, transportation assistance, home modification and repair, and legal assistance. The AAA also gives information on all of the community resources available. These community services may also include respite services for full-time caregivers, adult day care programs, help with patients with limitations of mobility, Alzheimers disease and related disorders, or medical conditions that require daily attention. If money is an issue, the AAAs can direct you to other sources of assistance such as subsidized housing, food stamps, Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid or the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program. It can also connect you with home-health care agencies, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other in-home services as well. Older people and caregivers in need of assistance should contact Eldercare Locator by calling 1-800-677-1116, Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 11 PM., Eastern Standard Time. For more information about AoA and the aging network, contact the Executive Secretariat, Administration on Aging, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. 20201. Phone: (202) 619-1012, Fax: (202) 260-1012. E- Mail: aoa-esec@ban-gate.aoa.dhhs.gov. The Internet Website is http://www.aoa.dhhs.gov. An excellent site that I found that allows you to share your tips with other caregivers or simply get advice is the Indiana Association for Home Care, 8888 Keystone Crossing Suite 1000. Indianapolis, IN 46240. Phone number- 317-8446630. Fax-317-5758751. You can go to their website and post tips, or look them up at http://ind-homecare.org/pages/tips_tips_for_caregivers.html.
